Oil lamps by British Coal Mining Company, Den Haan & Weems & Plath
Oil lamps and onboard lighting using oil lamps may be a romantic
lingering of the hey-days of ocean going seafarers. However, onboard Mad
Dog Voyager we have several oil lamps and enjoy using them. The light,
ambiance and warmth generated by these oil lamps creates an incredibly
cozy and relaxing atmosphere onboard Mad Dog Voyager. While we have
halogen main cabin lights on a dimmer and LED reading lights, nothing
compares to a quiet night relaxing onboard or entertaining friends
within the glow of the oil lamps.
A suggested practical application of the lamps is to use Citronella to
ward of insects (this was also done in the old style pressurized
PetroMax lamps)
We have several oil lamps on board from the following manufacturers:
1 British Coal Mining Company
2 Den Haan (DHR) marine oil lamp
3 Weems & Plath
Den Haan oil lamps:
They have some nicely designed oil lamps available. We have 2 Den Haan
oil lamps that we bought at the same time. Their quality standards
however were a disappointment. We have replaced our Clipper lamp
(pictured below to the right) twice already, once because of a faulty
oil burner and once because the threads of the oil burner to the oil
reservoir became so tightly locked together that it was impossible to
separate them.
The British Coal Mining oil lamp and the Weems and Plath oil lamp have
worked flawlessly since the day they came on board.
